A two-year-old Korean boy named Sambo had a brother - now they are trying to come up with a name for him

On the last day of the 2019 World SAMBO Championships, which took place in the Korean city of Chungju, a son was born to the family of local coach Lee Kihun. In honor of the tournament and in honor of the sport, the coach named his son Sambo. Exactly two years later – also on November 10, but already in 2021 – Sambo had a brother. Now his parents and the entire Korean SAMBO Federation together come up with a name for him.

The fact is that, firstly, according to Korean traditions, the name of the younger brother should contain a part of the name of the elder, and secondly, both the family and the federation want to give a name related to SAMBO, while not going far beyond the usual format...

As for Lee Sambo, he already goes to the sports club with his dad. Lee Kihun is a trainer at the SAMBO/Aikido Club in Chungju City. Lee Sambo with great interest tries to repeat the movements of those who train. He is not involved in sports yet, but he will soon begin physical training suitable for two or three years of age. Lee Sambo is an energetic and cheerful boy. He prefers meat in food, he can also eat spicy kimchi. At the same time, Sambo is growing, as is the sport for which he is named, ahead of the average pace.

Kwon Kihoon, Director of the Korean SAMBO Federation for International Cooperation, said that in Korea there are no diminutive forms, so the boy's name is Sambo at home. The name, of course, is unusual for Korea, but it is well remembered – in the kindergarten, in the clinic, in the district government, everyone already knows him well.

According to the father, both brothers in the family will be brought up as future athletes. Moreover, education does not mean only training. An illustrative story happened recently.

“When dad praised Sambo for being active in the gym, he apparently thought that it would be good to work out the “techniques” in kindergarten as well. But the parents quickly weaned him off, because Sambo should protect the weak, and not offend friends," Kwon Kihoon said.

When the coronavirus pandemic ends, the family plans to visit Russia. And Lee Sambo will see the homeland of the sport that gave him the name.

이삼보 동생이 형과 같은 날 태어나

2019삼보선수권대회 마지막 날 개최지인 한국 청주에 거주하는 이기훈 관장의 아들이 태어났다. 대회와 삼보를 기념하여 이름을 삼보라 지어주었다. 정확히 2년이 지난 2021년 11월 10일에 동생이 태어났고 부모와 대한삼보연맹 일동은 함께 작명 고민에 빠졌다.

한국 전통에 따르면 형제 이름은 돌림자가 있는 점도 감안할 부분이며 동생 이름도 삼보와 관련된 이름으로 지어주고 싶으나 보편적인 이름의 틀에서 너무 벗어나는 것도 피하고자 한다.

이삼보는 아버지가 관장인 삼보/합기도 도장에도 따라 나온다. 관원들의 동작을 보면서 움직임을 따라한다. 운동을 본격적으로 시작하지는 않았지만 곧 나이에 맞는 수준의 강도로 운동을 시작할 계획이다. 힘이 넘치고 유쾌한 성격으로 고기를 좋아하고 매운 김치도 잘 먹는다. 빠르게 발전하는 삼보와 마찬가지로 이삼보도 또래에 비해 빠르게 성장하고 있다.

한국은 외국처럼 이름을 바꾸어 부르는 애칭은 잘 없어 가족들도 이름 그대로 삼보라고 부른다. 삼보라는 이름이 한국에서 흔한 이름은 아니라 사람들 기억에 잘 남는다, 유치원, 병원, 관공서에 가면 사람들이 다 알아봐 준다.

아버지는 아들 둘 다 선수로 키울 계획이다. 단순히 체력단련에만 집중할 것은 아니며 최근에 재미있는 에피소드가 있었다고 한다.

삼보가 도장에서 기술 따라하는 것을 칭찬했더니 유치원에서 ‘기술연마’를 시도하는 바람에 삼보는 약자를 보호해야 하고 친구들을 괴롭히면 안된다고 잘 타일렀다고 한다.

코로나 팬데믹이 종식되면 삼보의 본고장 러시아로 가족여행을 갈 계획이라고 한다.
